Ashgan El-Hamus portrays small human dramas on screen with intimacy and emotional depth. During her studies at the Netherlands Film Academy, she wrote the short films Beerenburgh and Flynn. She graduated in 2017 with her thesis film Aimée, before working on the NPO series Skam NL. In 2020, her short film Birdland won the Grand Prix de la Ville Brest at the Brest Film Festival. She also wrote and directed the Lois Lane episode of the television series Onze Straat. Al Baraneya is her debut feature film.
